Anand, V vs. Carlsen, M (World Chess Championship 2013, Round 9; Chennai, India)

I think this is the most memorable chess game of 2013. With a win on this very complicated Nimzo Indian defense in the 9th round of the World Chess Championship Match in Chennai, Magnus Carlsen of Norway and currently the highest rated player in the world has assured himself of the title. Viswanathan Anand, the reigning world champion, after an explosive opening blundered with 28.Nf1 that sparked comments, criticisms and varied reactions from chess players and fans around the world.

After a fighting draw in the 10th round, Carlsen finally wrested the World Chess Title. Ironically for Anand, he got dethroned in his hometown India and this is the first time he has not won a single game in a World Chess Championship Match that he won in 2000, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012.
