Gem (Apple head Chihuahua)
Gem is what is considered as an "apple head" Chihuahua. Usually, Chihuahuas are described to be either an "apple head" or a "deer head" depending on the how the shape of their head looks like. This kind of physical characteristic however is not considered as an official way of describing this breed. The officially recognized type of Chihuahuas is the (1) long coat and the short coat.
Gem is a long coat with a "loyal and only one master" kind of attitude typical of most Chihuahuas. She would not allow anyone to hold her without my consent. She is very fierce in guarding her territory and is very alert. The moment she hears a noise emanating from any corner of the house, Gem would immediately run to check it out. This kind of behavior is common to all my Chihuahuas. Their erect ears are like radar that can detect almost any sound. What they lack in size is compensated by their very territorial and protective nature wherein they bark incessantly to warn of potential intruders.
It is one dog year is equivalent to seven years to a human. In this regard, we can say that Gem is already a teenager who loves discovering the world. I often see her looking outside perhaps imagining what the world really looks like. With Gem, I see how a Chihuahua is nothing different compared to us. She likes to be comfortable and loved. She is happy cuddling and taking care of her sister - Jewel and her daughters - Mocha and Hershey.
I saw my pets more as mere pets or animals. They, just like us, feel love and pain. Once you get a pet, you will immediately see not just an animal but a companion and a friend. Once you begin to see them more than the animal, you would immediately question the "tradition" of treating them as mere ingredients.
