Online is the Future of Chess

I never thought that this could happen. I never imagined that malls will be closed, people would be required to stay at home, and that being close to someone literally is a risk. Who had ever imagined that a pandemic of this magnitude will occur? Who had ever imagined that the mere shaking of hands can have unhealthy consequences?

Now that social or physical distancing is a must and maybe the "new normal", the future of chess is definitely online. Chess tournaments where players meet on the chessboard,  shake each other's hand and touch pieces is a health risk given the Covid-19 infection. The risk of getting infected can be avoided if chess tournaments are played online. With the help of the internet, chess players can stay home while pushing pawns and pieces. There are great chess apps for playing chess online. In fact, there are several chess tournaments that were held online.

The whole world has changed in just a month's time No one has anticipated the effect of this pandemic on society and on chess. Now that most are quarantined at home, playing chess online is the only alternative for players. The internet is the only viable option for players to continue playing chess.

To help "flatten the curve" and not to further add to the burden of our Frontliners, we got to stay home unless there is something very essential that we must do outside. Instead of being anxious or worried, which would not help anyway, why not consider this as the perfect opportunity to learn and play chess online. If you already knew how to play chess, this is the time to improve by reading chess books or analyzing your previous games. There is always room for improvement.
