The Squeaky Hedgehog Surprise
Huggy was a tiny chihuahua, a little puffball of brown fur with ears that stood up straight like perfect triangles. Her tail wagged so hard her whole body wiggled, a perpetual motion machine of pure joy. She lived in a cozy little house in Toronto, where the seasons changed in a beautiful cycle of green leaves, golden hues, and crisp snow. Her human, Crissy, was her world, but her best friend was Catty, the cat. Catty was a sleek patchwork of soft white and brown fur, with bright green eyes and a purr that rumbled like a tiny motor.

Huggy had one love that surpassed all others: her squeaky hedgehog toy. It was small and blue, and its squeak was the most delightful sound she had ever heard. She loved shaking it until her head blurred, tossing it into the air and catching it, and carrying it around the house like a precious treasure. The hedgehog slept in her bed, it sat next to her at meal times, and she even tried to sneak it into her food bowl, a habit Crissy always, gently, had to stop. The hedgehog was hers. All hers.
The New Toy and the Funny Feeling
One sunny afternoon, with a patch of sunlight streaming through the window, Crissy came home with a brand new toy just for Catty—a fluffy, bright yellow feather on a stick. Catty’s bright green eyes went wide with pure excitement. She swatted at the feather with her paws, her sleek body a blur of motion as she chased it through the sunbeam. Purrs rumbled in her chest, a happy song that filled the quiet room.
Huggy watched from her little dog bed, clutching her squeaky hedgehog tightly in her mouth. A funny, wobbly feeling started in her tummy. It wasn't sadness, exactly, but something close. She wanted to play too, to chase and pounce, but the hedgehog was hers. She couldn't play with it and with Catty at the same time.
Soon, Crissy went to the kitchen to prepare a snack. Catty, a little out of breath from her feather chase, curled up on the rug. Her purring slowed to a gentle hum as she batted at the feather with a single paw. She looked like she was having fun, but she also looked a little...lonely. The room felt quiet without the sounds of two friends playing together.
A Squeaky Invitation
Suddenly, a new thought popped into Huggy's little chihuahua brain. A bold and brave idea. She carefully got off her bed, her squeaky hedgehog still held gently in her mouth. With soft, padding steps, she walked over to where Catty was lying. She nudged the hedgehog towards her with her nose.
Catty blinked her big green eyes in surprise. She looked at the hedgehog, then at Huggy. Huggy's tail gave a little wiggle, a silent message that said, "Want to play?"
Catty, understanding the invitation, gently tapped the hedgehog with her paw. It made a perfect "squeak!" sound. Catty's ears perked up, her eyes bright with a new kind of game. She batted it again, and this time, Huggy playfully pounced, trying to take it back. This wasn't a fight for the toy, but a friendly game of sharing. Huggy would nudge it, Catty would bat it, and sometimes they'd just lie side-by-side, sniffing their shared prize.
It wasn't quite as fun as having the hedgehog all to herself, but seeing Catty's happy face and playing with her felt surprisingly good. The little purrs and gentle swats were more satisfying than any solitary game.
Then, Catty did something unexpected. She picked up the yellow feather in her mouth and, with a silent thank you, gently dropped it near Huggy. Huggy sniffed the feather. It tickled her nose! She gave a little sneeze, and Catty's purr deepened.
Now it was Huggy's turn to be surprised. She nudged the feather back to Catty, and they spent the next few minutes batting both toys around. They weren't just two animals playing with toys; they were two friends sharing a happy, joyful moment.
When Crissy came back with their snacks—a small piece of cheese for Huggy and a little saucer of milk for Catty—she saw them playing side-by-side with both the hedgehog and the feather. A soft smile spread across her face.
Huggy realized that even though her squeaky hedgehog was her favorite, sharing it with her friend made playtime even better. It was more fun to have Catty giggle (in her own purring way) as they played together. From that day on, Huggy still loved her hedgehog, but she also learned the joy of sharing her toys and playing together with her best friend, Catty. After all, having a happy friend was even better than having the best toy all to herself.
